The Curfew Tower artist Residency
I was lead Artist in Residency and Curating along side artist Rosanne Robertson with our artist led project space The Penthouse, of Bill Drummond’s The Curfew Tower which is in a small town called Cushendall on the Antrim Coast of northeast Ireland between 2017-2018
In 2017 The Penthouse sent over 10 north west artists to explore their situation to the tower and the surrounding town of Cushendall considering themes of restriction and liberation of action and in action.
The residency ended with a finial event called Queer Curfew during the festival of the glens.
For our final event I created our colours from the roof tops
this work was an action in response to us pinning the rainbow flag on the tower at the being of the residency and it being ripped day within a week.
Below are some more examples of work that i produced at the curfew tower and in response to issues of equality and rights for women and members of the lgbtq+ community in Northern Ireland. and my situation as a lesbian situated in a tower that was built to imprison delinquents and the unsavoury taking into consideration ideas of restriction and liberation
held within -the stone and the wood
photographic works in the prison of the curfew tower.
queer aversions performance for camera
exploring Northern Ireland lgbtq+ rights and equality, in Northern Ireland aversion therapy still goes on to try and change people from being gay. I produce a series of images using old electric shock equipment.
I created a new performance for queer curfew which was performed around the fire in th curfew garden inspired by my aversion photographic works and research. using ritual and fire ashes and a live built up soundscape.
Flying The Rainbow Flag on The Curfew Tower.
In 2017 artist Rosanne Robertson and myself went over to the tower to lay the foundations of The Penthouse curatorship which started with us erecting a rainbow flag.
Flying the rainbow flag from a Curfew Tower in a small Northern Irish town. Declaring a Tower to be homosexual and/or Queer is a comment on heteronormative society. When you step through those big clunky doors that imprisoned deviants you are now in 2017 entering a queer space.
NOTE : The rainbow flag was ripped down after a week of flying.
“The Curfew Tower has been active as a residency program for many years and has an established and strong track record within the contemporary art scene in the UK and Ireland. There are few arts venues located in ‘rural regions’ that have this important national status; The Tower brings art from the capitals to the local.”
