Untitled 1989

Hand printed sliver print

This is an original hand printed photograph from 1989.

The image was taken in a woodland on the outskirts of Holmewood council estate where I grew up in Bradford. My early photographic explorations turned away from social documentary and focused my lens on the isolated queer body in the natural landscape. The surreal nature of the still body face down fixed within the life of the over grown woodland floor communicates a detachment between queer life and what was deemed natural during a heightened period of queer erasure.

Currently being exhibited for the first time in the exhibition Plant Dreaming at Leeds Art Gallery.

As you can see all the blue tack marks on the back from it being placed on various walls of places I’ve lived throughout its time.
