The Kiss

In 1990 I produced a series of images on slide film with my best friend Jonathan and his boyfriend, this series of images queered the heteronormative domestic environment and placed it in the outside landscape, As well as wanting it to be about positive queer visibility and love.

The Kiss is part of this series.

I showed this image at the time on my BTEC PHOTOGRAPHY course in Leeds and was met with disgust and outrage from most of the other students on the course and tutors, it was the height of SECTION 28 and homophobia. At the time there wasn’t much queer representation in photography and lack of understanding of my work and the homophobic jokes around it I never showed this work again. until recently going through my archive and showing the work on instagram. Its great that we have moved on so much now with better understanding of queer art and theory. I will be looking at ways to exhibit this work in the future.

a few of the images from the series below.
